Christianity has a long, though complex, history among the Azeri people, who predominantly live in present-day Azerbaijan. Before the arrival of Islam in the 7th century, Christianity was widespread in the Caucasus region, including what is now Azerbaijan. The region came under the influence of the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire and the Sassanian Empire, both of which supported Christian communities. The Kingdom of Caucasian Albania, which covered parts of modern Azerbaijan, adopted Christianity as its state religion in the 4th century, influenced by both the Armenian and Georgian churches. Early Christian communities used languages like Albanian and Armenian in their liturgies, as Azeri (or Azerbaijani), a Turkic language, had not yet fully developed in written form.
With the Islamic conquest of the region in the 7th century, Islam gradually became the dominant religion, and Christianity declined. Over time, the Azeri people converted to Islam, and the influence of Christianity significantly diminished. However, traces of Christian heritage remain, particularly in the form of ancient churches and Christian communities, such as the Udi people, who preserve the heritage of the ancient Church of Caucasian Albania. Today, Christianity in Azerbaijan is a minority religion, with small communities of Orthodox Christians, Catholics, and Protestants, while the Azeri language is primarily associated with Islamic cultural and religious life.
