Kyrgyz Books & Bibles FAQ
An Overview of Christianity and the Kyrgyz Language
Christianity among the Kyrgyz people has roots dating back to the early centuries AD when the Nestorian Church spread across Central Asia along the Silk Road. While some Turkic groups, including ancestors of the Kyrgyz, encountered Christian communities, most converted to Islam by the 10th century. With the Islamization of Central Asia, Christianity’s presence among the Kyrgyz faded, and the majority remained Sunni Muslim.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, Russian Orthodox missionaries arrived during Russian expansion into Central Asia, leading to small Orthodox Christian communities among the ethnic Russian population in Kyrgyzstan. In the post-Soviet era, renewed missionary efforts resulted in translations of the New Testament and portions of the Bible into Kyrgyz, making Christian texts accessible in the Kyrgyz language. While the Kyrgyz Christian population remains small, the availability of Kyrgyz-language Christian resources has supported the growth of a small number of Kyrgyz Christians, particularly among those interested in Christianity from a cultural or academic perspective.
