An Overview of Christianity and the Thai Language
Christianity was introduced to Thailand, then known as the Kingdom of Siam, in the 16th century by Portuguese missionaries, but its early influence was limited due to the strong presence of Buddhism, which remains the dominant religion in Thailand. Subsequent missionary efforts came with the arrival of French Catholic missionaries in the 17th century and American Protestant missionaries in the 19th century. Protestant missionaries, particularly those from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, played a significant role in establishing schools, hospitals, and translating Christian texts into Thai, which helped increase interest in Christianity among some Thai communities. Despite these efforts, the growth of Christianity in Thailand remained modest, in part due to cultural resistance and the deep-rooted Buddhist identity of Thai society.
The translation of the Bible into Thai began in the 19th century, with the first complete Thai New Testament published in 1843 by Dr. Dan Beach Bradley, an American missionary who also contributed to advancements in Thai printing and education. The full Thai Bible was completed in 1883 and has since been revised to better reflect the nuances of the Thai language. These translations allowed Thai-speaking Christians to access the Scriptures in their native language, supporting a growing but still minority Christian population. Today, Christianity represents a small percentage of Thailand's population, with both Protestant and Catholic communities present, particularly in urban centers and among ethnic minorities in the northern regions. The Thai Bible remains a crucial resource for the Christian community, which continues to engage in outreach and service within a predominantly Buddhist society.
